Involvement in Crime

“Teenage boys and girls who had been in trouble with the police were twice as likely to become a teenage parent, compared to those who had no contact with the police”

The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy works with the Youth Offending Service and the Youth Crime Prevention Service and has trained staff in sexual health and contraception awareness to enable them to deliver the Drugs, Alcohol & Sexual Health (DASH) programme to young people attending the service.

The Youth Offending reception area is a YPF site, offering free condoms and information and referrals to young people attending the service. Staff have also been trained to deliver Chlamydia screening on site.

These services are just for young people attending the YOT and are not publicised to young people outside of the service.

A high proportion of young people in custody aged 15-21 are parents. 25 per cent of Young Offenders in custody are estimated to be fathers, while 39 per cent of female Young Offenders in custody are estimated to be mothers.
