Introduction to Teenage Pregnancy

Back
To Top

The government launched the national teenage pregnancy strategy in 1999, with two main aims:

  • To halve under 18 conception rates by 2010
  • To increase the numbers of teenage parents accessing education, employment or training by 60% by 2010

The Strategy also aims to maintain a downward trend in the number of under-16’s conceptions.

Nationally the strategy is performing well with under-18 and under-16’s conception rates now at their lowest levels in England since the mid 1980’s.

The 2008 provisional conception statistics are due to be released in February 2010. National conception data can be found at:

What the data tells us

Redbridge has a rate of 31.0 teenage conceptions per 1000 young women aged 18 or under (2007) compared to the national rate of 41.9. Despite being a slight increase from the 2006 rate of 30.2 this is markedly lower than the national increase of 2 per 1000 under-18 conceptions for 2007. Of these conceptions 61% ended in termination – a 5% decrease in terminations from 2006. To read more on Local data click here to download the 2006 report:
