FAQ

I am a teenager and I think I may be pregnant. Where can I get further advice and information?
You can find more information about what to do if you think you might be pregnant on our sister site: www.teenpreghelp.org.uk or at www.youngpeoplefriendly.co.uk
I am a teacher and a student has disclosed to me that they are pregnant. Should I tell her parents?
No, parents should not be informed without the young persons consent. If a young person has disclosed this information to you in confidence this should be respected except in child protection cases (refer to the Fraser guidelines on the resources page). Refer to the retention and reintegration flow chart for further information on procedures to be followed after a disclosure has been made or if pregnancy is suspected.
I am a youth worker and distribute condoms at work. Can I give condoms out to young people under the age of 16?
Yes you can, for further information and guidance refer to the Redbridge youth Service, Sex & Relationships Education Policy & Guidance for Youth Workers.
I am a pharmacist signed up to the Free Emergency Hormonal Contraception scheme. Can I give EHC to young people from outside of Redbridge?

The main concern is the well being of the young person who has come to you to access FREE EHC. If a young woman requires EHC she should be prescribed it. This will not affect your reimbursements.

The EHC campaign has been advertised cross borough with Barking & Dagenham, who implemented their FREE EHC scheme in 2003. Young people from outside of Redbridge may be aware of the Logo from promotion in other boroughs or may study or work in Redbridge, but live outside of the borough. These young people should be able to access the service with confidence.

How can I join the EHC pharmacies scheme?

If you are a pharmacist working in Redbridge and you have not attended the training to distribute EHC contact the primary care trust to find out when the next event will be held.

There are certain criteria & requirements that you must fulfil as set out in the Patient group directions. You must be a registered member of the pharmaceutical society for Great Britain (MRPharmS), have the specialist training, experience and competency required including child protection training, knowledge of Fraser guidelines, local sexual health services and patient confidentiality and be prepared to commit to continued training and record keeping.

The pharmacy at which you are based must have a suitable private area for consultation with patients. This may be an area in the shop where privacy can be maintained rather than a separate room.

The pharmacy will be required to have leaflet space and designated window space for our EHC logo sticker, which has been widely publicised to local young people.

There must be comprehensive arrangements for security, storage and labelling of medicines. The pharmacy is required to have facilities for the safe disposal of clinical waste and unused medicines, have access to a telephone and have a current British National Formulary.

If you meet these requirements and are interested in joining the scheme please contact Kim Saleh-Jahromi for more information on: kim.saleh-jahromi@redbridge-pct.nhs. Tel: (020) 8926 5114

Where can I get free condoms to distribute to young people?
Free Pasante condoms are available as part of the Redbridge PCT condom distribution scheme. To access free condoms you need to have attended the Pasante condom distribution training. When this has been completed by a member of your team free condoms can be ordered directly from the supplier. The next training date is the 7th November 2007. Places can be booked through Kim Saleh-Jahromi. See the Training & Events page for more information.
