Other Risk Factors

A range of other factors can contribute to the likelihood of a young person experiencing Teenage Pregnancy or Parenthood.

Young Carers are a vulnerable group that often have experienced different types of family relationships to those of their peers, may have a lot of responsibility in the home and can miss school and Sex & Relationships Education due to their role as a carer.

The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy team works with the Barnado’s Indigo Project in Ilford to deliver targeted SRE support to young carers accessing the service and in supporting the professionals working with them.

The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy links closely to the East London Out Project (ELOP), who support young people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transsexual or Questioning (LGBTQ).  ELOP offer support and free condoms to any young person accessing their services and can provide free counselling.

“Dislike of school has a strong independent effect on the risk of teenage pregnancy”. Bullying, disengagement from school and difficulties attending due to caring responsibilities can be factors for these “at risk” young people.
