Preventing Teenage Pregnancy

Provision of young people focused contraception/sexual health services, trusted by teenagers and well known by professionals working with them, is the factor most commonly cited as having the biggest impact on conception rates in high performing areas.

Redbridge Teenage Pregnancy Strategy provides promotional resources, developed in consultation with local young people, for the YPF condom scheme, Emergency Contraception in pharmacies scheme and Brook services.

We work closely in partnership with NHS Redbridge to support professionals through workforce training and service development by implementing schemes such as YPF, to make services more accessible to young people and help them overcome barriers such as fear of being judged and embarrassment.

We also manage and promote our supporting websites www.youngpeoplefriendly.co.uk for local services and www.teenpreghelp.org.uk for young women who are, or who think they might be pregnant.

“86% of the decline in teenage pregnancy in the US from 1995-2002 was the result of increased use of contraception or increased use of more effective methods.” (Santelli et el, Teenage Pregnancy Strategy Beyond: 2010, Pg 17)
