Tuition and Education Welfare
In accordance with the Education Act 1996 Local Authorities have a duty to provide suitable education for all the pupils in their area either by ensuring sufficient places at school or by making alternative arrangements for those who are unable to attend school through illness, have been excluded or some other reason (including pregnancy).
For pregnant school pupils and young mothers of statutory school age the LA will support tuition in conjunction with the school, if deemed necessary, for the period of 18 weeks “maternity leave” and for any sustained period that the pupil is not in school for medical reasons.
The Redbridge Tuition Service works with children from age 5 - 16 who are temporarily out of school.
The Service provides education for pupils who have been permanently excluded; those who are at the risk of exclusion; school refusers and non-attenders; those who have medical conditions and illnesses, which preclude them from attending school; including pregnant school girls/mothers.
The Service takes referrals through the Education Other Than at School Panel, (EOTAS) which meets weekly.
