The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy and the Youth Service

Back
To Top

A well-resourced Youth Service, with a clear remit to tackle big issues, such as teenage pregnancy and young people’s sexual health, has been shown to be a key factor in contributing to downward trends in under-18 conception statistics in high performing areas. By working closely with the Youth Service and supporting them in addressing issues around teenage pregnancy and sexual health, Redbridge Teenage Pregnancy Strategy aims to reduce under 18-conceptions in line with government targets.

Connexions

Back
To Top

Produced by the Social Exclusion Unit, Teenage Pregnancy (1999) prioritised two main goals. To halve under-18 conceptions by 2010 and to increase to 60% the proportion of teenage mothers in education, training or employment to reduce their risk of long term social exclusion.

Redbridge Connexions service can provide young people with direct support in making decisions about their future direction. Personal Advisers are based locally in One-Stop-Shops at The Connexions Centre and Ilformation. PAs can also be contacted in schools, colleges, and through partner organisations. These include M-Power (Youth Crime Prevention Team), Leaving Care Team, Refugee and Asylum Seekers Forum, Young People’s Project and the Children and Disabilities Team.

A Connexions Personal Advisor works directly with pregnant teenagers and teenage parents to support them in continuing in education, employment and training. PA's provide information and support on a range of related issues including benefits and housing. Connexions can be contacted on 0208 514 9567.

The Teenage Pregnancy Personal Advisor works directly with pregnant teenagers and teenage parents to provide advice, guidance and support on any issue preventing a young person from staying on in education, employment or training i.e. housing and benefits.

A Connesions PA is based at the Young People’s Project to offer support. Click here for more information on YPP.
